The Superintendent in opening the Council . said that since last census the population of the Province had increased from 45,000 to 49,000. The area under cultivation had nearly doubled. The exports for the past year amounted to more than L 1,000,000. The estimated receipts for the year was L 262,800, and the amount actually obtained for the past eight months was L 450.305, During the year 117,671 acres of land had been surveyed in consequence of the rapid increase of population. It is proposed to reduce the rates of freight on the railway lines. Several new lines of railway will be opened for traffic soon. It is intended to call for tenders for^ irrigation works. A vote would be asked for to pay an engineer to report upon the drainiug of Lake Ellesmere. Further grants for public libraries would be asked for.
