BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The members of the Borough Council met last night in the Fire Brigade Hall, the Mayor in tV>e chair. After the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, The several committees appointed to make arrangements for the reception of His Excellency the Governor brought up their reports, which were approved of and adopted. The following report was handed in by the Public Works Committee ; — • " Your Committee have the honor to recommend that one phain of wharf, lately occupied by Mr Wilson, be let to Mr Holder, for the purpose of landing timber, upon condition to deliver up possession with one week's notice from the Council. "2. Your Committe recommend that two larger windows be placed in the offices now being rebuilt, and one in the gable above the offices, cost not to exceed L 5. " 3. Your Committee recommend that Richmond Quay be gravelled at a coat not to exceed Lls. "4. Your Committee have to report having given Mr Johnston instructions to have a dangerous hole filled up in Mount street at a cost of about L 3. "5. Your Committee recommend that Mr Hungerford should receive notice to fill up a large hole in Mount street which he had excavated without permission from this Council, and that persons be prevented from cutting rtimber from the Council's reserves. "6. Your Committee recommend that five mooring piles be driven on Richmond Quay, at such places as the harbormaster i may point out to the Town Surveyor. I "7. Your Committee have instructed I the Town Surveyor to • report to the Council upqn the drain complained of by Mr J). M-l^ean in Hospital strest. "8. Your Committee inspected the work done by Mr Lawrence in Tainui street, and cannot recommeud the Council to entertain the application. "9. That the proprietors of M'Carthy's brewery be requested to abate a nuisance which exists upon their premises, and extends beyond, to the great anaoyance of the residents in the viciiiity of Murray and Alexander street south. 10. Your Committee recommend that a contract be let for cutting drains required along Murray and Alexander street south." : All the clauses of the report were adopted by the Council, with the.exception of clause 8, which, on the motion of Mr Kbrr, seconded by Mr Hamilton, was referred back to the Committee. Tenders were then opened for the three different contracts called for, namely, Boundary and Herbert streets, William, and Chapel streets, and Taraphui and'
Leonard streets. The successful tenderers for the two first were O'Malley and party, at tho respective prices of L 289 and L9B los. While D. M'Kenzie's tender for the last-named was accepted at L 96. On the conclusion of this business, Mr Hamilton rose to give notice of motion that he would, at next sitting of the Council, move that tenders be called for Mount and Chapel streets ea3t, as also for the drainage of Murray street. Mr Kkkr suggested that the.standing orders be suspended by the permission of the Council to allow the mover to put his motion to the meeting at once. This was accordingly done, and the motion was put and carried unanimously. The Council then went into Committee upon matters connected with tb.9 visit of I his Excellency the Governor, after which it adjourned.
