BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual weekly meeting of the: Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last night. Present — the Mayor, 1 . Councillors Moore, Kerr, Acheson, Smith,: andDupre. Sub-Inspector Hickson wrote asking that Sergeant Moller should be appointed Inspector of Nuisances during the illness of Constable Keating.— rThe appointment was made. i: . :, ; The same; officer forwarded <a letter that had been sent to him by a number of residents in Tainui street, complaining of the large number of goats allowed to wander' at large: in that street. The police were 1 powerless to act until an appointment was made by the Council. The Town Clerk explained that the delay in making the . appointments referred to was owing to the County Chairman not having gazetted them, as requested to do on the 23rd September. It was ', resolved ', that , t the Town Clerk write to the County Chairman requesting that the appointments should be gazetted as soon as possible. The Mayor stated that Moodie, MacGowan arid party, contractors, had. complained- to him that they had paid in L2B as deposit on a contract, and when they drew it out they only received L 24. They said that some of the money was in cheques and Lls in notes. Mr Acheson said ; that when the tenders were opened by the chairman (Mr Kerr) he requested him to count over the notes. He did so three times and found them to make It'll, consisting of one L 5 note and six LI notes. He could swear positively there was no more. He remembered handing the money to the Tpwn Clerk, whp counted it, and said it was LlO, but he replied; "No, Lll," when ; it was ccunted again and found to be correct. Mr Dupre remembered Mr Acheson making the remark that it was Lll. Mr Kerr said he was in the chair that night, and remembered that he, the Town Clerk, and Mr Acbeson all counted the money, and agreed as to the amount. He moved the appointment of a committee to enq uire into the complaint. The Mayor seconded the motion. Messrs Moore, Acheson, and Smith opposed the appointment of a Committee, as no further evidence could be obtained than was then before them. The motion was not put, and the matter dropped. The following report from the Public Works Committee was read and adopted : "Your Committee, after considering the plans and specifications for street works, submitted by the Council for report, gave instructions for tenders again to be invited, to close on Thursday, November .13, and that permission, . for the completion of the works, should be granted to obtain gravel from the follewing places, viz., Turumaha street at Tainui street, Turumaha street at Murray street, and from the shingle spit at the nprth-east, end ef Mawhera Quay, with use pf all the Council's tramway plant, and steam engine, if required; by the successful tenderer. " Ypur Committee recommend that the works pf stone facing on Richmond Quay should be completed, so as to allow the use of the tramway plant as quick as possible." A discussion took place as to filling in the hole at the end pf Johnston street before tramway was rempved, but the' matter was referred to the Public Wprks Committee,; with ppwer tp act. Mr Smith, as Returning Officer fpr the East Ward, read the f piloting report : — "As Returning Officer for the East Ward of the Borough of Greymouth I have the honor to report that on Monday, the 3rd day of November, Messrs Francis Hamilton and Charles Woolcock were; nominated candidates for the office of Councillor for the East Ward, and that on the 6th day of November, Mr Charles Woolcock, with the consent of his nomi-, nators retired as a candidate, therefore Mr Francis Hamilton will be returned without opposition, on the 33fch inst." Mr Acheson moved— "That tenders be called for the supply of gravel re-: quired for repairing the streets during the next six months, at per yard, as re-^ quired." This: was seconded by Mr Moore, and carried. ■ The Town Surveyor laid on the table his plan for the proposed bell-tower and look-out. It was approved of, and the Town Clerk was instructed to \,call for tenders for its erection, and also" for the erection of a bell-tower, at the east end bf Mackay street. ; . . . . The Council then adjourned.
