The following were nominated :— J. D. Pinkerton, proposed^ by J. A. Marshall, seconded by j. W. Jones. ■ R. Gray, proposed by W. J. Potts, seconded by Andrew Nichol. Frank Guinness,; proposed ;.' by A. Nichol, seconded by J. A. Marshall. D. M'Kenna, proposed by Ti McCarthy, seconded by J.,Daveyi,' Corbett, proposed by Livingston, seconded by T. M'Carthy. The show of hands was as follows: — Guinness, 18 ;, Pinkerton, 15 ; M'Kerina, 11; Corbett,6; Gray, 4. A poll was demanded, and was fixed'for the 17th inst.

A meeting of merchants was held today, to consider the advisableness of forming a Sugar Refining Company, with a capital of a hundred thousand pounds. Provisional directors were appointed to obtain infprmation on the subject^ and, if satisfied, to form and register the company. Nelson, Nov. 7. At ihe city nomination to-day, Pitt, Rout, Levestam, Acton Adams, Green- ' field, Hooper, and Burn were proposed. The show of hands was in the order named. There is growing excitement regarding' the Superintendency election. It is : rumored that Shephard will be nominated. The returns have been received from nineteen pelling places, including Auck-I land, Thames, Coromandel, and all the Waikato districts, giving Williamson,! 2140; Dargaville, 1704; Lusk, 1087.' The Northern returns are expected to be favorable for Dargaville and Lusir. The latter is now considered out of the race. The Hero left Sydney on October 31. No later English news to hand. The overland telegraph line to Persia has been interrupted, it is supposed to have been burnt.

Two shops have been destroyed by fire atGeelong. Mrs Steadman has committed suicide at} Sandhurst by taking sulphuric acid. Henry Morgan, member of the Legislative Council, is insolvent. His seat is vacated. Horatio and Dag worth did their gallops this morning, the former beating his stable companion. The betting is now 100 to 30 against him for the Cup. The Geelong Race Meeting is fixed for the 6th and 6th of February. A splendid rogramtne has been issued. •
Chief-Harbor-master reports favorably of Johnson's rockets and distress signals made at a distance of three miles at sea. Wheat, 6s 3d ; flour, heavy. Laonceston, Oct. 31.
George Moreton, clerk at Page's coach office, has been arrested on a charge of forging a bank deposit receipt at Adelaide.
The weather has been disastrous to the crops. ;
