MUNICIPAL COUNCIL ELECTION.

The election of three members for the Municipal Council, in room of Messrs Rae, Magoffin, and Kilgour, who retired by rotation, took place on Thursday. The peculiar circumstances under which this retirement took place— the tliree gentlemen who were. called upon by law to vacate their seats at the Council-board having beon elected only a few days previously, and never having had the honor of attending a meeting of the Council— naturally excited a good deal of interest in the result of the contest. In addition to the tliree who offered themselves for re-election, three other candidates came forward, two from the upper end of the town and one from the lower. It was never expected that this latter gentleman would be returned, as the principle upon which the previous election was conducted —that of a fair and equitable representation of both divisions of the town— was, by the larger body of the people, brought into play on this occasion, and the result must be looked upon as satisfactory, only one of the three who were recently returned being rejected at this election. Thursday was a busy day with the supporters of the various candidates, who canvassed the town in search of votes with commendable energy, and the number of votes recorded shows the amount of interest which was taken in the election by the citizens. At four o'clock, the Returning Officer, Mr Revell, announced the result of the poll to be as follows : — Messrs J. Kilgour ... 98 W. Rae ... 93 E. Masters ... 82 D. Magoffin ... 58 G. Simmons ... 53 J. Heron ... 48 He then declared Messrs Kilgour, Rae, and Masters to be duly elected. This was received with loud cheers. Mr J. Kilgoub came forward and returned thanks for the honorable position in which the electors had placed his name on the poll that day, and also for having returned him to the Council on the last occasion while he was absent from the town. He thought there seemed with one section of the inhabitants to be a misunderstanding with regard to him, the reason for which lie did not understand, but he hoped his career in the Council would prove that they were mistakes with regard to him. (Cheers) He would always feel it to be his duty to do everything in his power to further the interests of the whole town. In all public matters affecting the welfare of the town he had always taken his share, and he would c mlinue to do so, and discharge his duty to the public, irrespective of any private interests whatever. (Cheers.) On the matter in which he was most deeply interested—they would know what he meant— he would be guided solely by the opinions of the majority of the Council, aud would not take any steps adverse to that, majority. (Loud cheers.) Mr Rae thanked the electors for the position in which they had thought fit to place his name on the poll, and assured them that everything he had promised he meant to perform. (Applause.) Mr Masters also returned thanks, and promised to use all the influence of his position for the good of the town generally, and to deal fairly with all its various interests. (Cheers.) The crowd then dispersed.
