BANQUET TO ARCHIBALD FORBES.
[press association telegram.]
DUNEDIN, December 5,
The Forbes’ banquet to-night, given to him under the auspices of the Caledonian Society, was attended by sixty or seventy gentlemen. Amongst those present were the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, Messrs Bathgate, Pish, Bracken and Rutherford, M.H.R.’s, J. W. Larnach, Stout and many leading men of the city. Mr Bathgate proposed the toast of the evening in a happy speech, referring to the many gifted men of the Forbes family for generations past. Mr Forbes, in reply, made a humorous speech, which was greatly applauded.
‘ Mamma,’ said a little one who had been sent to dry a towel before the fire, ‘is it done when it’s brown ?’ Irish repartee is proverbial. A professional man addressed an artisan, who was waiting in his hall, rather brusquly—- ‘ Hallo, you fellow, do you want me ? ’ The answer was neat —‘ No, yer hounor, I am waiting for a gontl’mean.
