The Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Monday, October 11th, were as follows: — Spirits, .£278 Is lid ; tobacco, .£25 11s; cigars, £25 17a 2d; wine, £ll4 5s 8d ; beer, £179 18s Cd ; sugar, £315 11a 6d ; tea, £4O 9a 4d ; goods by weight, £967 7s 8d ; ad valorem, £546 11s; other duties, £8 8s; total, £2502 4a 9d. SUGAR SALE. Messes H. Matson and Co. offered for sale by auction on Monday, the llth iust., at the warehouses of Messrs Dalgoty and Co., Cathedral square, Christchurch, the cargo of Mauritius sugar, ex Smiling Morn. There was a fair attendance of the trade, but the recent Arrivals of sugar from Mauritius and Queensland have had a prejudicial effect upon the market. The biddings were slow, and the best efforts of the auctioneer were taxed to effect Bales. Nearly 1700 pockets wore sold as follows, in bond—viz., Nos. 23 to 21, snowdrops, <386 pockets, at £35 10s to £34 10s per ton; Nos. 20-20 to 15, 902 pockets, finest white urystals, at £34 10s to £33 10s, i.b.; No. 11, 100 pockets, fine white crystals, at £33 per ton. About 600 pockets have been sold since the sale, at an average of the above price.
