[Pre§s Special Wire.] Auckland, April 27. A meeting was held yesterday to consider a proposal for the establishment of a young women’s home by Miss Laura Smith, recently from England. Many ladies and ministers were present. Miss Smith read a carefully written paper showing th it excellent domestic servants might be got from England. She desired to establish a home in Auckland for boarding young women. Another meeting was arranged for Friday. The Meg Merrilies was sold for .£2500, not ,£2200, as previously stated, Nimrod, in the “ Star,” says the racing in Auckland this season has been a splendid success, many more people going into breeding. Papakura stable will have an annual draft for sale. An Auckland sportsman has purchased at Sydney late sales four useful yearlings from boldsborough, Kelpie, Marioyrnong, and Sydney. Tim Whiffler and Ariel have changed hands at a good price to an Epsom sportsman. The first coursing match is fixed for the 28th May. The Hinemoa is expected at ten to-morow. Sir G. Grey will probably proceed to Waikato on Monday. Napier, April 26. On Monday next a change will take place in the proprietorship of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald,’’ Mr Thomas Morrison retiring, and Mr Thomas Walker, who is well known in Wellington, taking Mr Morrison’s place. Wellington, April 26. It is reported that Mr G. S. Cooper is not in any present danger. Mr George Thomas, auctioneer and merchant, has been compelled to call a meeting of his creditors on Monday next. The Immigration Offic;r at this port has received 267 nominations of immigrants for despatch by the outgoing mail. This is an unusually large numb-T. The Magistrate at the E.M. Court this morning, called attention to the practice of hanging goods at the doors of shops. He said t'us was a direct inducement to larceny. Mr Mansforl, R.M., expects to resume his duties on Monday. The Taiaroa brought the shipwrecked crew of the Euby on here. Mrs Harrell made her appearance at the Imperial Opera House last right as Lady Macbeth for the first time in three years. She received a splendid lec ption, the house being completely packed. By the decision in the suit brought against him at the instance of the Harbor Board, Mr David Proudfoot has to pay that body =£3050 a year for hL leases. Mr H. Prince lias, through an agent in Sydney, purchased throe highly-bre 1 co’ts. Two by Gainsborough, and one by Yatlendon. They are now on their way to Dunedin in the Wakatipu.
