SATUBDAy, Al'Elli 13. [Before G-. L. Hellish, JSso., R.M.] Dbunkenness. —David Hughes, suffering from the effects of drink, was remanded to Lyttelton for eight days for medical treatment. G-. W. Debenish was fined ss» JBichard G-uise was charged with the above oitepue. Mr Garrick appeared for Mrs Guise, and stated that ho wished to have accused hound over to' keep the peace towards his wife. last five or six years, during which time he had intervals of drinking fits. Lately he had been drinking heavily. Only yesterday he was in a disgraceful condition, perfectly mad from the effects of drink. He had actually sold the whole of the furniture in his house yesterday, including an eighty-guinea piano, for £ls, to a man named Wright. Mrs Q-uise was examined, and deposed that she had suffered ill-treatment at various times, and was afraid to live with accused. Mr Allison Smith deposed that he lodged in the house. He had heard accused threaten the life of Mrs Guise one night, and on going downstairs saw him lay a knife down on the table. Ho was of opinion that the lives of Mrs Guise and her children were in danger. The Bench ordered accused to find two sureties in £2O each, and himself in £4O, to keep the peace for twelve months, or, in default, one mouth’s imprisonment.
