(Per Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency. ) Wellington, October 15. Miss May received a benefit last night, and performed ‘ ‘ II Trovatore ” to a crowded house. The Taranaki arrived with the Governor on board this afternoon. The opening of the College is postponed till Saturday, owing to the weather which continues wet, with high winds. Dunedin, October 15. The Invercargill is at the Heads. She brings 390 statute adults ; all well. She is one of the Albion Company’s new ships, and is under command of Captain Tilly. Six deaths and four births occurred on the voyage. Mr McGillivray addressed constituents at Riverton last night, and expressed himself greatly in favor of North Island abolition resolutions, as he considered those provinces a burden on the General Governor nt. He had always been opposed to provincialism. H« would also advocate the abolition of the Middle Island provinces. He was against the system of free immigration, and believed in the nomination system, and a free grant of land desirable. The immigrants who paid their own passage would work much better, and this would induce superior classes of people to come, and be likely to become lona fide settlers. After an able speech, Mr McGillivray received a unanimous vote of confidence. Lyell. Oct. 15. The river between the Lyell and Westport has been unworkable for about a month. The tracks are quite impassable, and food is getting scarce. The last bag of flour was turned into bread yesterday. There is only about one ton of potatoes in the place, and a bnsr or two of oatmeal. Should the bad weather continue, the population must 1c ave in a body. Westport, October 15 The Alma from Melbourne for Greymouth is now in the roadstead with hei foremast gone. 6.55 p.m. The p.s. Lyttelton brings news from the schooner Alma, in the roadstead. She has lost herjibboom, bowsprit, foretopmast and gear, and mainmast. Her decks were swept. Her boats are gone, and half her crevvwere washed overboard. The Kennedy is going out to tow her into the Buller. 7.50 p.m. The Alma is safe at the wharf. She is much knocked about. Her starboard bulwarks are gone, and also the top spars, galley, deck house, and all the cargo from forehold; two bands only were lost, James B. Farden. chief officer, and Andrew Brinotone, A.B. She got the gale on Monday right while lying-to, sixty miles N.W. of Westport. THIS DAY'S TKLEGIIA MS. Wellington, Oct 16. Much anxiety is felt as to the whereabouts of the steamer Rangitira from Napier for this port. She was last heard of on Wednesday, when she left Castlepoint for Wellington. The Taranaki went out in search of her at eight this morning. Dunedin, Oct 16. Mr Wales addresses his contstituents next week. The inquiry into the Rattray street fire commenced yesterday. Two wittneeses were
examined, who swear that Mrs Schmidt, proprietress of the house, caused the tire, and admitted so. Mrs Schmidt denies this. The enquiry was adjourned till to-day. [FROM OUR DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT.] Dunedin, Oct. 16. The Marquis of Normauby leave Queensland air-ut November 12th. He proceeds to Sydney, and from thence to Auekl: ml. His staff consists of Captain Mai mg, 35th Regiment, private secretary, and Lord Henry Phi;.ps, aide-de camp. The Medora, laden with tea for Lyttelton, foundered at Hong Kong during the gale there. The crew were saved, but the vessel and cargo are lost. The cargo was fully in sured in the New Zealand, South British National, and Standard companies, but the amounts are not known here. The Star hears that Colonel Maude goes home, and Major Gordon is likely to receive the Under-secretaryship of defence. It suggests that Government might do a graceful act, and give the inspectorship to Major Atkinson before he leaves the service.
