But of course there the matter ends. Yet is a notorious fact that scarcely any city in the colony is so badly off for conveniences for bathing as Christchurch is. We have a beautiful river running through the whole length of the town, in whose cool and limpid waters a header would be exceedingly refreshing to our dustcovered citizens; yet the only place where such a luxury can be had is situated at a most inconvenient distance from the centre of the town. Of course, all sorts of schemes have been proposed to supply this want, but the one which appears the most feasible is, that the City Council should take the matter in hand. All that is required is that a portion of the river should be enclosed, and some conveniences erected for undressing and dressing. The structure need not be an expensive one, and if a small fee were charged, it would more than cover the cost of maintaining it.
The question of training the public to habits of cleanliness is of more importance than at first sight might appear. Bodily cleanliness tends to mental cleanliness, and is therefore an agent in the prevention of vice and crime. The time was, when the use of the bath was scarcely known even among the wealhty classes. An amusing passage is found in Pepy’s diary, and the manner in which the fact is recorded shows how rare the occurrence was. It is as follows : —“ My “ wife to the bath this morning from “ eight o’clock where she did stay two “ hours. She hath taken a fit upon her “ to live cleanly henceforward ; but I “ do guess how long it will hold.” We all know that that age was an exceedingly coarse one, and perhaps the neglect of the bath had something to do with that said fact.
