DEATHS ON ROAD

SHOCKING MISHAP NEAR MASTERTON, CAR AND LORRY COLLIDE. MAN AND WIFE KILLED. TWO OTHERS SERIOUSLY INJURED. (Press Assoepion) MASTERTON, Feb. 15. A husband and wife were killed and two .others injured, ono gravely and tho• other seriously, as the result of a shocking motor accident which occurred this evening on tho main North Road about 12 miles from Mastertbn. Tlio victims were:

KILLED

Leslie William Sharman, cycle dealer, Masterton. Margaret Sharman, wife of Leslie Sharman.

INJURED

Charles Herbert Howes, carpenter, Masterton; condition very grave. B, Water ß , Masterton, extensive injuries; condition fairly serious.

The accident occurred on a bend on tho road. The car, which was beiing driven by Leslie Sharman, collided with a, transport lorry heavily' laden with fruit and driven hy r Raymond Cedric Bushby, fruit merchant-, of Hastings. Neither he nor his companion was injured. 'flic car left Masterton about 5.30 p m. on its way to Rahncrston North. Mr. and Mrs. Sharman occupied the front seat. While there were no eye witnesses, it appears that the ear, a heavy sedan struck tlio lorry on the side! just past the cab and tore away much of the woodwork of the lorry sido and scattered apples over a ivide area. 'The full force of the impact v'as felt on the driver’s sido of the car, which was reduced to a mangled mass.

Mp. Sharman was killed outright and his wife only lived tor a lew minutes.

The lorry was able to proceed under its own power, but the car was damaged almost beyond repair. The Shannons are survived by an only' child, a. girl of about 8 years. Mr. Sharman had been in Masterton about 12 years and was very popular, taking a prominent part in sport and Foresters Lodge affairs.

It is understood that -Mr. Sharman was a brother of Mr. Sharman, proprietor of the Hole-iu-the-Wall restaurant in Gisborne.

ANOTHER. VICTIM DIES. FOURTH IN CRITICAL STATE. (Press Association) Later. M ASTERTON, Feb. 15. Mr. Howes died at 11.20 p.ui. and Mr. Waters is in a critical condition.
