NOTES AND NEWS. i Araunab Avas unplaced in the Holyrood Handicap.—P.A. • « •* A further, scratching from the St. Leger Stakes, to bo run at Doncaster to-day, is Lord Derby’s colt St. Magnus. • * • Lord Lonsdale, for the first time since 1874, - will not. attend the Doncaster races, because he is seriously affected by the-mining depression in West Cumberland, necessitating economising.—P.A.

Sporting Blood’s brother, Bold Blood, is engaged in the maiden race to-day at Wanganui, so bis appearance in the Guineas list on the second day is not due to the forfeit being overlooked.

Rod Manfred, a Wanganui Guineas winner, is duo to make his reappearance at Wanganui after an absence from the turf of some eighteen months. He won the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie last year.

Hunting Cat last season by winning the Manawatu Cup and other middledistance handicaps proved up to that class but now looks a Rill better horse. Ho is reported to be going along pleasingly in his work at NgatiraAva and will bo a member of the rather large contingent that will In, at Wanganui and Avondale.

Engaged in the Maiden Race at Wanganui to-day is the Hunting Song —Sangfroid gelding Black Forest, who in a couple of races last season showed enough promise to suggest that he would not be long in winning a race. Good reports are to hand regarding tho progress of this novice, ar.d ho will be ridden in his engagement by P. Atkins. « * m The Woodville candidate for flic Avondale Guineas, Mandamus, is engaged in the Durie Hack at Wanganui to-day, but the Liinond colt is expected to show up well over distances further than six furlongs this season. Only lightly raced as a two-year-old, Mandamus’ best performance was in ti'w Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, scAon furlongs, aaTipiv he finished a good second to Gustos, and gave the impression that ho was n. colt 'with stamina. This tbreo-yeor-old has been picasing in bis preparation, and should be in tip-top order for Avondale.

Mr H. S. Moss, secretary of the H.B. Jockey Club, bas notified -the club that it is his intention to retire from his office at tho start of next year, and when this resignation takes effect Mr Moss will have completed no less than 21 years of service as secretary of the club. Although tho club was not bv any moans an infant when Mr Moss took over the reins of

secretaryship, it was far from being as robust as it is at present, and,^as can bo realised, what- with the war period and then the slump, the elub went through some very difficulttimes. Under the competent guidance of the secretary and the committee, however, the club was able to hold its head abovo water, and it can row bo said that it is on the road to recovery after thp trying times it lias teen through.

A remarkable effort was witnessed during training operations at Ellcrslh on Saturday morning. Vers ant, ridden by liis trainer, G. Holland, went out to work over six furlongs on th • No. 3 grass track. However, on reaching this track Versant swerved and ran into one of tho poles that mark the distance which horses have to keep from the rails, so that the same ground will not be eontinuaily used. His rider was ljnscated, and Versant Avenfc away from the six-fur-long post and completed the gallop in 1.28 1-5. JTo did bis work just as though a rider Avas aboard him, increasing his speed at the three-fur-long post to run home from that disc in 41 3-ssee. On completion lie steadily slowed doAvn, pulled up, and trotted hack to tho patlnvay that gives access to the track. His trainer, aalio had Aval Iced back to that point, called out to Versant, avlio trotted right hack to him. He Avas remounded. and did pace AA r ork over a round of the sand track. It Avas a great example of equine- intelligence.
