MO NTH LA* MEETING OF COUNCIL

Tho monthly meeting of the AVaikoliu County Council was held at To Karaku yesterday; present: Messrs, A. A. Fraser (chairman), H. H. Dods, M. Doyle, 11. C. Rot’s and H. J. F. Tembleson. An invitation from the A favor of Gisborne, Mr. D. W. Coleman, ALP., to wild representatives to a tend a conference on August 3 to discuss the centennial celebrations to be liclcl in T9lO was accepted. Tho question of noxious weeds was discussed, and it was resolved to carapplications for the position of weeds inspector if it was found that suiteblo arrangements could be made to collaborate with tho Government stock inspector. The clerk of awards, Auckland, advised that an application had been made to have tho council joined to tho Poverty Bay and East Coast builders, contractors and general labourers’ award. Tho clerk stated that ii notice of objection had been Edged. —Tho clerk’s action was confirmed. Air. C. E. Bickford wrote asking for a list of persons employed by the council, also a list of those to whom contracts had been lot, in order that ho could seo if tho provisions of section 18 of the I.C. and A. Act, 1930, wore complied with.—The clerk said that tho information had been supplied. The manager of the Bank of Ncw Zealand, Gisborne, advised that the council had been granted an overdraft limit of £12,000 for tho current financial year.—The letter to received. Air. W. G. McMillan wrote asking that further work bo done to bis ao ccss road.—Tho engineer said that the matter had been attended to. Air. AI. Bell, secretary of the To Karaka Library Committee, wrote thanking tho council for its donation. —The letter was received. Air. W. L. Rutledge wrote suggesting that the council should apply for a grant for widening the Moann road.—lt was resolved to apply as suggested. Air. F. T. Robinson, county clerk, advised that tho Cook County Council concurred with the Waikoliu Council’s opinion that tho proposed allocation of cost of the AVaipaoa River bridge at Kaiteratahi was not equitable.—The communication was received. Messrs. Nolan and Skect wrote asking the council to exempt from tho requirements of section 128 of "'-ho Public Works Act a block in the l.e Karaka town district which it was proposed to subdivide.—lt was docidcd to pass the required resolution.

Authority was received from the Main Highways Board for expenditure of £267, £2 for £l, for bridge replacement at one mile on the Kanakanaia highway .-—The letter was received^ hide and sheepskin sale. Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., Wellington, report: “AVo held our usual fortnightly sale of hides and sheepskins here before a large bench of buyers. Competition for sheepskins was very keen with the result that the drop registered 'at our last said was, for the most part, recovered. Thio extent of the advance was fully a'halfpenny. Ox hides sold at par for rhodium and heavy lines, but extra =ligbt sorts eased considerably. All grades of- cows wpra slightly in buyers’ favour. Yearling and kip which firmed at our last sale weakened again to rates ‘ equivalent to those ruling a months ago. Calf did not maintain its recent improvement “ but dropped Ul. Tallow was firm."
