MONTHLY ALE ETING (Special to the Times.) The monthly meeting was held on Saturday. July 11. There were present. the- chairman (Cr. J. AlcNo'll) Crs. G. Black, H. R. Littlownrth, E. C. Loisel, F. A\*. Shelton, and P. T. AVeekfs. Lenve of absence was granted to Cr J. L. Reeves and it was resolved to write-expressing the hope that he would liavc a speedv recovery from liis illness.

The Minister for Internal Affairs advised that AVcdncsdny, August 5. had been fixsed for Arbor Day.

The Petone Borough Council forwarded a resolution relative to tho in eidenee of tire costs of ho'sp'tal boards administration being revived. It was decided to support the resolution.

The Cook Hospital Board advised that Ministerial approval had been received to 'the Board’s cash requirements for the current year and that the 'amount- required to he collected by the council is £741 Is 4d.

The Valuation Department, Gisborne, enquired as to whether the System >of selection of assessors laid down by tho Act had any advantage and whether general interest had been taken in any election o c assessors.—The clerk was instructed to reply that in the opinion of the council the selection of assessors should be made by resolution of the local authority concerned and that members of any focal authority should not be precluded Horn being appointed as assessors.

The Chief Surveyor of the Department of Lands and Surveys, Gisborne, forwarded a: plan of road to l>e taken and closed through sect'on s 3 and -5. The Public Works. Department, Gisborne, advised that no subsidies would be payable on bridge's built under No. 1,0 scheme, regardless of when the work was* authorised or completed. The clerk of flic eou't. Gisborne, advised that Os-burn Hura’.s driver's license had been cancelled by the court for T2 months.

The onginei-'r’s report istated:— Secondary Highways: The new shingle has been, re-graded and keptin shape on 1 lie Tolaga-Tamvbarcpa-rae highway, Walerlables are being cleaned out on the Tolaga Wharf highway. Further top dressing and grading J ins been, carried out on the Arakilif highway. Arak.lhi riding.—The public works arc completed lor this season, on the Kio-rc road. Some of the rough metal on the hill has been packed in, blinded and rolled and this section is l now much improved. Ordinary surface work has been, attended to on the other roads. Ma.uiti Riding.— A commencement has been made with top dressing the Waihau road with I’anikau metal, and also spuwling with papa s pawls a I'urher length of the Old Coast road. Mangaheia. Riding—The shingle on the Mangaheia. road has been repaired. Further urgent metalling on the far-end of the Mangatokorau. road has been completed. Slips are now well cleared and this road is -now in good order. Mangatuna Riding.—There is practically nothing to report in this riding. A tew hours’ work clearing watcrtables on the Kaiaua Hill has been done. T-amvhareparae Riding.— Work in this riding has been confined to general maintenance. The first ford on Rutledge’s road has been spawled and j® now'in good order. Tolaga Riding.—Further top dressing with river, -shingle has been done on the various metalling lengths in this riding. Main, roads.— A small amount of top dressng has been carried out on the Mangatokerau load and the bad length at the foot of McMillan’s Hill has been, metalled.
