MOTORING
ROAD OFFENCES AT A GLANCE
NEW KIND OF DRIVING LICENSE
To emphasise Tire ned for more careful driving a new kind of driver’s license has been suggested by an American automobile engineer. ■Around the edges of the license arc squares in which arc printed figures which range in, amount from 6 to 50. If a driver convicted .of some minor offence, such as failing to come to rest ■at a stop sign, he would be penalised. 5 points in addition to being lined, and a figu re 5 would be punched out. For drunken d iving, or 1 leaving the sceno.of an accident the penalty would be 10 points. These figures, of course, arc tentative and have been selected
to illustrate principle. The driver’s record would be maintained on a- five-year basis and lie would bo rated accordingly. For 'example -if bis total penalties in iivo y«K;s amounted to ; 100 points or an average of 20 points a year lie would bo rated a.s an SO per cent, driver. Onoo his rating as a driver was established the .severity of his .punishment for hew 'offences would depend on h :, s percentage rating. It. might be advisable to have the rating exhibited eu iu. special tag or combined with the license plate, so that the information would be available to everybody at a glance. A record- of the driver’s convictions' would also be kept on file so that in case the operator’s license was lost it could be replaced.
