BOROUGH COUNCIL (Special to Times) At. tlic.us.ual monthly meeting of: tli-e Council a letter was received <rom theTaurangtM 'Borough Council ashing . for support in urging tlio Post-master-General to consider the removal of! the Chief Post Office from Thames to Tau-ranga. It was decided to give support. The secretary- of St. John’s Presbyterian Church thanked the council lor the prompt miinncr in wine l ' the work had been carried out at the church property. The Valuation Department wrote stating that, owing to pressure of work, the department would be unable to. make a revaluation of the borough for about two years. It was decided that a, .special valuation be asked for the town clerk to make enquiries; as. 1 to the cost of same. A deputation from the Opotiki Boxing Association waited on the council with a request that a. piece of land be sot aside for the association for the purpose of erecting a. gymnasium. The association had to vacate its present quarters and required a piece of land on which to build a gymnasium approxirnatev 36ft. x 60ft.‘ The works committe was authorised to report bn a suitable piece of land for the purpose. The headmaster of the Opotiki School wrote complaining of the overcrowding of school buses. The traffic inspector! is to. be asked to look into the matter. t'Jie matter of Arbor Daycelebrations is to be left in the hands of Crs. Bucld and Johnston to ■ arrange. It was decided to support the Power Board in its efforts to obtain a reduction of the charge for hulk supply of electric power within the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Boai d district. The secretary ,of the Mechanics’ Institute wrote asking ior a remission of rates on certain properties and pointing cut that the institute per forms a public sendee m maintaining a circulating library and public reading-room, (n many other towns such a service wa.s a charge on rates. It was decided that the rater* bo collected and that a grant, of £lO be made to the. institute.
