BUILDING INDUSTRY
SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS IN GISBORNE. MORE AND BETTER CLASS HOUSES BEING ERECTED If faith in a town is measured b.v the progress of building, then confidence in Gisborne has risen tremendously during the past six months compared with the first half of 1935. From January to June this year general buildings erected or under construction in the borough totalled £28,710, compared with £15,729 ui the corresponding period last year. Amongst the general buildings are the renovation of Lysnar’s buildings iii Peel street due to the fire, and new premises for Messrs. I'. Corson and Sous and the Gisborne Fish Co., Ltd., these tlfrea, jobs accounting for £4275 out of the June total of £7175.
Most marked progress, however, is shown in the building of residences, 22 being erected as against IG last half-year, the totals being £16,230 against £8674. The average value, therefore, has risen from £542 to £738, a sure indication of the gradual return of prosperity to Gisborne. The withdrawal of the building subsidy lias affected the situation to some extent, as lias also the higher cost i I material aiul labor. Nevertheless the fact is evident that , a much better class of house is now being erected than was the ease last year.
