Stops lire to be taken to secure tlio permission of the Minister in Charge of the Police Department (Mr 1 Fraser) for tine holding of a conference at Wellington of representatives of the Police Force throughout New Zealand. The purpose of the proposed conference will he to consider the advisability, or otherwise, of forming a National Police Asisoe : at : on, The Minister’s consent is essential to the holding of the conference, as it would be necessary for delegates to snch a gathering l to secure official leave to attend it. Should the conference be held, and the vote he favorable to the format;on of the Association, then dlscusvsions will be held by the delegates on the form of its activities and operations, possible affiliation with other organisations, and so on. There is a st'ong body of opinion in the Force wlr'ch will oppose affixation or the linking with any other body, such a.s the Public Service Association, or other employees’ organisat'on. A Police A*ssoeiat : on operates in Australia, and it is claimed is a distinct asset to the. men and administration, enabling the airing of, and settlement of, complaints. Some fmc ago, the Minister stated that, if any representations were made to him in connection with the association, they would receive h : s consideration. In the event of the conference not taking place, the question of the formation of an association may he determined by secret, ballot, but official consent would still be necessary for this.
