FTRE O.V TRUCK NEAR OFOTIKI ONLY PORTION RECOVERED OXF. BAG OF NEWSPAPERS FOR GISBORNE BURNT Further particulars in regard to tho destruction by fr e near Opotiki on Friday night of an Anohinnd-Gis-borne Transport, Service truck, show that only a portion of the mails was removed Mom the burning vehicle. The mails lost comprised one bag of papers from Auckland to Gisborne, two parcels receptacles from Auckland to Opotiki, and one parcel leceptable- from Wellington to Opotiki. making ai total loss of three parcel bags and one of paper mail. The Gisborne bag lost comprised papers posted in Auckland between the departure of Thursday night’s Main Trunk express, and the closing of the more direct mail closing in Auckland on Friday morning. All mails from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty to Gisborne were saved.

When an inspection was made on Saturday by tho postmaster at Grpo-t-'ik-i. the truck was still smouldering.

Chorred remains of shoes and boots and of clothing were to be seen in the Ishos, hut it. is possible that .these were included on the truck as freight and not ais mail matter. Tiro freight conveyed on' the truck was completely destroyed. Insurance to the amount of £SOO will cover a part of the loss in this respect; while tho truck was also insured for £SOO.
