A disgraceful incident, fortunately of a very- rare kind in any portion of the Dominion, occurred in Gladstone road just before 7 o’clock on Satur-

day evening. It appears that three men buttonholed another man at the corner cf Blight street by Messrs. Rosie and Co.’s premises. Wishing to get away from them, the man set upon-backed away across the street, with his pursuers attempting to get round him. When the party got to the footpath opposite the Friesia tea rooms, the three men closed in on the victim and he went down.

A member of Mr. C. Ivess’s billiard room staff, Mr. Wellington, wa>, at the corner of Bright street talking to a friend and he kept an eye on thr proceedings, as lie could not understand why the men should have ‘followed the other one. across the toad in the way in which they did. Wh:n he saw the victim of tho assault fall, ho rushed across to the scene and stood over him to prevent his assailants from kicking him again and to enable him to rise.
