WAR ON RAGWORT

DEPARTMENT’S METHODS CRITICISED. MAGISTRATE'ALLOWS COSTS AGAINST !T----(Press Association)WELLINGTON, May 19. Severe criticism of the methods that were employed in serving summonses on property holders for failure to combat the ragwort menace were made against the Department of Agriculture to-day by two of twelve defendants who appeared before Mr. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Their protests were upheld by Mr. Lawry, who said he was so annoyed at the way the proceedings had been conducted he proposed allowing costs against the Department on the six summonses which were withdrawn, equivalent to the fines on the others. One of the defendants said that about fifty summonses had been served, but there was no positive identification of the land. All the land was said to be heavily infested with ragwort, whereas actually the pest was just putting in an appearance.
