TASMANIA’S UNKNOWN SOUTHWEST. Tlio first authentic discovery of mercury (quick silver) in Tasmania was made recently at tho Jane River, part of the huge undeveloped and practically unknown territory in South-West of Tasmania. The find was not of deep economic importance, but it adds another to the long list of metals found in Tasmania. The number so, far identified and catalogued is more than 360, which is probably a record for a territory the size of Tasmania. The Government is pursuing a policy of track cutting and assisting prospectors in the south-west, and various discoveries of alluvial gold have been reported in recent months.
