BATHERS SURPRISED
OLD BY-LAW ENFORCED AT NEW BRIGHTON
Bathers at New Brighton, Christchurch, have been surprised to find that it is an offence against the New Brighton Borough Council’s by-laws, not only to appear in the streets clad in bathing costumes, but also to appear on certain parts of the beach without more clothing than a bathing suit provides. The by-laws have been brought- to the notice of visitors to tlio beach by the appearance of the police, who have made a surprise visit to the- foreshore and taken names.
Under the old by-law, passed in 1917, the prohibition against bathing suits extends nearly to high-water mark. The Mayor of New Brighton, Mr E. L. Smith, told a representative of the 'Christchurch Press that this provision was obsolete and that an alteration was immediately necessary.
The police had been asked to see that the by-laws of the borough were observed, because of the prevalence of offences such as the wilful destruction of property, but it was not expected that they would enforce tho full provisions of the old by-law.
