BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY meeting. Borough .affairs were dealt with at the monthly meeting- of the council on Wednesday night. Th© Mayor (Mr John Jackson) presided and also present were-. Os IT. E. Maude,. J. W. 11. Holmes, 11. Holmes, W. J. MacGibbon;, J. H. Hall, D. S. Thompson and! 11. H. De Costa.. Mr s E. A. Nicholas, lessee °f 'the Gisborne aerodrome, wrote asking for permission to remove yards and certain fences erected on-the land during the tenancy—The engineer was asked to report on the position. The secretary of the -To Hapara School committee forwarded; a, request that the concrete kerbing and! drain in Mill road bo extended 21 ft. to the school entrance.—Th<> request was referred to the public works committee. The secretary of the P.B. Winter Show Association applied for permission to use the borough, section in Palmerston road, opposite Messrs Common, Shelton and Company, m connection with th 0 forthcoming Winter Show.—The application was granted on the same Terms as last year. The secretary for the Municipal Association forwarded n,n opinion re-' carding tenure of Rutone road reserve. —Cr IT. Holmes moved that four croquet courts he laid down on the reserve. —This was seconded by Cr J. W. H. Holmes who, however, believed the possibilities of other borough property should be explored. —Cr. Maude considered an estimator of the cost should he obtained. —-The Mayor mentioned that, without using No. 5 scheme, the cost would ho about £265.—0r. Do Costa moved, as an amendment that the ladies’ committee interested should lie asked to confer with the reserves committee.—Cr. TI. Holmes intimated that, he would withdraw hi s motion in favor of the course suggested l)y Cr De Costa.—The motion by Cr De Costa was then carried., the reserves committee being granted power to act. Thc Mayor stated that representations had been made to him regarding th© 'awful state’ of Crawford road. He had inspected, the roadway and found it was in very bad order indeed, largely as the result of cattle passing.—lt wag .decided! to obtain a- report on the roadway. Cr De Costa contended that the eight pumping stations required to be changed over D.C. to A.C., thus reducing interference with wireless. Th 0 total cost of tli e change-over would be £2600, and he believed it would be a good plan to change over one station each year. This was not a responsibility of the Power Board in his opinion. He moved' that the matter be referred to the engineer for a report.—This motion iwas seconded; by Cr Hal] and carried. GENERAL REPORTS. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The public works committee reported as follows: “A list of contemplated works for the fortnight was submitted by tm engineer, the principal being: Continuation of hot mix works and grading of footpaths; driving of piles and replacing of decking, Roebuck roa bridge; cleaning out of open drains, etc. The engineer was granted leave from April 24th to 27th to visit Hamilton to view the water filtration plant. “An estimate was submitted b,\ the. engineer of £25 19s as the cost oi constructing a stone wall at the Eitzherbert street reserve to replace the present wire fence. This work your committee recommend the engineer be authorisd to undertake. “A complaint made in regard to cars parking in front of business premises was considered by your committee when it was decided that no action be taken in the matter. Jt was considered that any further restrictions imposed in regard to the parking of vehicles would only add confusion and serve no useful purpose.” TREE PLANTING IN STREETS. A special committee -.reported regarding a conference with representatives of thc Beautifying Association as follows: “The Beautifying Association submitted a list of trees proposed to be planted in Gladstone road, and after a general discussion on the matter, it was decided to recommend the selection of suitable trees be left to the Beautifying Association, but to lie confined to the following: Silver birch, limes, chestnuts, magnolia conspicua and ginlego bilboa. Should the organisation desire 'to inelu.de other trees the names to he first submitted to the council for approval. “An offer was received from Mrs W. Clark to donate trees and guards for same, to bo planted in Doniett street. This offer your committee recommend be accepted with thanks. The selection of trees to be planted is to.be discussed by the Beautifying Association, and submitted to the council for consideration.” ENGINEER’S DEPARTMENT. The. engineer,. Mr. E. R. -Thomas,' reported,. inter alia, on -the following matters:— ‘f Reserves.—Usual work has been carried out gat the various reserves and at Anzac Park and Aberdeen road vegetable gardens. '.‘Maintenance,—Maintenance work comprised: Street cleaning; cleaning stormwater drains and sumps; repairs to various streets; trimming drains ancl footpaths; cartage of soil; mowing grass on roadsides; grading gravelled . roads; minor repairs, to.. plant and buildings. ‘■‘Roads.—Maintenance, gravel lias been placed on Awapuni and hospital roads, Mary, Okie, Dalrymple and Russell streets. , “Footpaths.—Hot. mix: paving of Aberdeen road , footpath, south side, from Roebuck road to Lytton road, has been completed.. Small, sections of footpath in Upper Gladstone road above Lytton road and in Mill road ■ "'i v' : . • ■ 7 -5 .

Piilmerston road footway, between Cobden street and Roebuck road, has been ;formod and ; graded in readiness for paving. *',■ 5 “Roebuck Road —The replacing of some of the sway braces has been completed. The driving of piles and replacing of decking will be put in hand after the Easter holidays. “Read’s Quay Improvement Work. —The grading of the river bank has. been partly completed. Grass seed vvill bo sown on the prepared portion as soon as weather conditions are i: vorable. The construction of concrete steps has been completed. “Unemployment Relief Works. — Work has been provided for 135 men per week. The main works comprised: Vegetable gardens at Anzae v Park and Aberdeen road reserves; cleaning and trimming drains and footpaths; grading riverbank Road'sQuay; various jobs at the council’s yard; cutting noxious weeds.” WATERWORKS. Regarding waterworks the engineer reported that reticulation throughout the borough had been given the Tisual attention. No new services were installed during the fortnight. Gauge readings were: Highest, 1201bs, lowest 251bs. Staff: Work had been carried out as follows —Repairing main dine, tobys, valves, hydrants and services; reading meters, preparing ground at Taumata Hill for sowing, grass seed. The main line was maintained in working order. There were, three leaks, viz., at Matawhero, during the fortnight, Taumata Hill supply being turned on while “repairs were being carried out. The quantity of water that passed through the Venturi meter for the weeks ending Bth and loth April, 1935, was 6,550,000 and 6,550,000 gallons respectively. The reports were adopted.
