REGISTERS FOR BUSES

COUNCIL’S NEW PURCHASE REPLY Tv CRITICISM The recent action of the Borough Council in deciding to hire eight fare registers for the municipal uuses evoked a brief discussion at Wednesday night’s meeting and it was pointed out that most of the critics of the council in this regard were ignorant of the true ffadts. The, meeting approved -of the publi--cation of a statement of the position now being prepared by the bus manager, Mr K. G. Ball. The subject was raise)! by the receipt of a letter from the National Cash Register Company, Ltd., advising willingness to hire to the council eight fare registers for four years at annual rental of £3OO, the council to hav© the right to purchase within four years, hire payments to be credited towards the purchase price. Cr. H. E. Maude raised the matter of recent criticism of the council for deciding to secure faro registers. Most of those critics wore ignorant olf the facts of the position. The speaker, had discussed the matter with one critic, an accountant, and, after a full explanation, this man had agreed wholeheartedly that it. was an excellent business move. The bus manager, too, had been studying the fare problem for many years and be was a very strong advocate of the' registers, so surely the council should take Mr Ball’s opinion ahead of uniformed. outsiders. It seemed to him that it would he a good plan to make a statement of the whole position so that, ratepayers could realise it. was a. very wise step on the part of the council. Tiie Mayor (Air John Jackson) stated that he had arranged for Mr Ball to prepare such a statement, which would, with the approval of the council, he published. While absent from Gisborne recently Mr Ball had interviewed a. Wnirarapa user of the same type of fare register, and this man had been very enthusiastic about their value. Cr. J, If. Hall believed that the new counci should have an opportunity to go into the matter. Cr. Maude pointed out that, the new council would take some time tcv get acquainted with the position, and, in any event, they had the opinion of Air Ball to guide them. It, was then decided to accept the company’s offer in terms df ithe letter above and also that the manager’s statement be published as soon as available.
