OBITUARY

MR JOHN KAIN. Deepest sympatliy ifrom residents of the Gisborne and Waima districts will be extended to the widow and family of the late Mr John Kain, who died at Wairoa on Tuesday. He was formely a well-known farmer of the Ngatapa and later the Wharekopae districts. He was horn in Canterbury in 1870 and was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Kain, one of the early pioneering families df that province. On completion of his primary education Mr John Kain attended Canterbury College, and subsequently entered the teaching profession. After holding the position of assistant master at various isehools, he was appointed headmaster at Matotuku School, Hawke’s Bay, where he remained for five years. In 1910 he resigned from that position to take up •sheepfarming at Ngatapa, hut as the settlers there were greatly inconvenienced at that time with regard to educating tbefr children, there being no school nearer than Patutahi, he was persuaded to carry on eaching for two years. By that time a school had been built and a permanent teacher appointed. Mr Kain continued farming at Ngatapa until 1917, when he sold his property and later took over 2400 acres of land at Wharekopae. However, the fall in prices for produce which affected iso many settlers resulted in his applying to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board for a position as a teacher, and he was appointed to the charge of the Korokoro School, Arc]keen, on the Wnikaremoana road. While resident, in the Poverty Bay district Mr Kain took an interest in local body affairs, and for some years represented the Wharekopae riding on the Waikohu County Council. The late Mr Kain was predeceased by his first, wife about 12 years ago, and some years afterwards lie married Mrs Nellie Morris, of Gisborne. Resale his widow there remain to rnourn their less of the first marriage throe done!liters, Mrs Noble Campbell, of Hawke's Bay, Miss Louisa, Kain, Auckland, and Miss Isabel Kain, Gisborne, and two ■sons, Messrs John and Edmund Kain, both of whom reside in ill's district. One son, Mr Thomas Kain, lost his life while serving on the Aurora. a vessel which was mined in the early stages of the war. MRS JAMES LAAIONT.
