An application was made in the Arbitration Court today by-three organisations of employers in the Wellington provincial district for an amendment of the rate scale in the printing trade apprenticeship order. In effect they asked that the scale be brought into line with the scale granted by the court in September 1933, in respect of a similar order applicable to the Auckland district. The employers’ submissions were based upon the altered state °f the industry as n whole and ifcs reduced earning’ capacity as compared with the last year which might he regarded as being a normal one, viz., 1929-30. It was pointed out that in the interim. all businesses had been maintained with difficulty and that the workers by way of during that time received an increased proportion of the earnings of the mdustrv. , The application was opposed on the ground that there had been an improvement in the printing industry and an. increase in journeymen’s wages of approximately 5 per cent.
