IMPRESSIVE CEREMONIES AT
WHAREPONGA

'Whareponga Settlement was recently the scene oi -seme very impressive ceremonies. These were the unveiling of beautiful embroidery on the inside wall of tho -church as a memorial to the lato Rev. Pino Tamaliori. This ceremony was conducted hy tho Rev. Wanoa and others who- feelingly spoke of the many excellencies of the Rev. Tamahori, whose place in the community would be so bard to fill.
Another ceremony was the unveiling of a memorial pergola at the school ground entrance. Attached to this are two inscriptions—one in memory of tbo lato Laxly Ngata (whose early home was in Whareponga) and her son, the late Mnkarini Ngata, and the other records tho names of tho men who made tho supreme sacrifice in. the Great War. The memorial to Lady Ngata was unveiled by her grandson, and the soldiers’ memorial hy Will and lena Ngata, son and daughter of tho lato Lady Ngata. These memorials are enhanced by the beautiful arch (a gift of the Whareponga School) and the ornamental gate supplied by the Education Department. A. further interesting event wa* the -cutting of the ribbon which officially opened the Ngarimu Park surrounding the church. During the afternoon, lavish refreshments were partaken of in the school grounds hy a large number of visitors and a pleasant dance in the evening ended a, notable day. The proceedings evidenced a. commendable civic- pride in the community, and while many worked haiß to ensure success, 'Special credit is due to the inspiring efforts of Mr and Mrs Keith. When the motor access road to Whareponga is completed, no doubt many will avail themselves of a to this attractive little Bay.
