CANADA’S WHEAT FARMERS'. PLEA FOR A REASONABLE RETURN. (U.P.A. by Klee. Tel. Cpuynght) (Received April 7,''5 p.m.) WINNIPEG, April 6. Efforts to give Canadian wheat growers a reasonable return will prove successful, Mr J. I. McFarland, general manager of the Canadian I Wheat Pool believes. He expressed the opinion that the Wheat Board, if appointed, can operate successfully without full control over .coarse grains. He says the question now is: “Are we going to let a few international exporting firms and a milling combine fix wheat prices .or are wo going to have a say in the Fixing of prices?” | and expressed the belief that there I was but small interest in the market, but declared that the pool was not i doing anything to force up the price. | Regarding possible loss of markets because prices would be out of line with world quotations, he said that there wolud be no permanent loss; in fact, there would bn no such thing os | a permanent market. | Two years ago, Mr. McFarland said 1 a party of British millers visited Winnipeg when the price was around fifty cents per bushel and talked j about eliminating the Grain Ex- | change and of direct dealing, lie said ■ to them: “Support'you buy say five or ten million bushels of No. 1 and hold it against your needs. What i would you pay?” They bad finally agreed they would probably be willing to pay forty cents. Tic said; | “Haven’t you any bowels of com pa s--1 sion for the farmers at all.”
