At the Police Court thM afternoon before Mr Bundle S.M., James Pearsou was charged with keeping « common gaming house at- Opoho. In asking for a. remand Chief Detective Young said that- accused had been arrested at his h.ous-e, and! he desired the remand in order to place all tho 'facts before the Court. A remand was granted until Monday, baq! being allowed in accused’s own sureta/ of £SO 'William Prince Avals charged at a later sitting of the Court with keep ing a common gaming house. Accused pleaded not guilty. Chief Detective Young said that! accused had just been arrested 'and ho asked for a remand for a Av-eok. As a sequel to the publication at a pamphlet entitled * McArthur Strikes Back at Coates and tli° Kelly Gang,” Maurice' Vincent Bates Auckland manager of the investment Executive Trust of New Zealand, Limited, was changed in the otic© Court with dispersing, and also with publishing a pamphlet m which the place o!; abode of the printer was not stated. H© pleaded guilty.
The police said that over 1500 pamphlets had been printed. Bates said they had been printed on instruction's. from Australia. The printer had been prosecuted on similar charges at Wellington.
Counsel said the offences w c re only technical. The defendgm had relied on tbo printer, who said ho thought the printing of the firm’s name w:Us sufficient.
The Magistrate suggested that a conviction on ono charge wouil'd suffice, but the prosecuting deticetivo said he had been instructed to press both, charges. The magistrate said ho appreciated the defendant's bon:*, fid'es, aiul fined him the minimum of £5 on both charges. lie also suggested an application to t'lu> Minister for Die remission of one fine. v
