MOTOR PROBLEMS

FIXATION OF PETROL PRICES SOUGHT. LIABILITY IN COLLISIONS. (Press Association) NELSON, March 12. The South Island Motor Union in committee considered the fixation °f petrol prices, and decided that reresentations he made to the Government u'rging that effect be given to the will of the people in respect of petrol prices as expressed in the Bill passed by Parliament last session.

The Union passed a resolution regarding specal motor taxation, that for the present year and in the future, the whole funds collected f° r the purpose of the maintenance and construction of main highways be paid in,to the fund of the Highway Board and left intact to be used fo'r the purpose originally levied.

A remit from South Canterbury that the use of wireles’s sets on motor vehicles in motion is not conducive with safety, and that the first step s be taken to prevent them, was heavily defeated, only the mover voting in favo'r. Mr. F. D. .Sargeant (Canterbury), moved that the ba'si s . of liability in collisions on land be considered similarly to liability for cases ■ 01 collision at sea. M'r. Sargeant uaid the 'present bauis of claims was not satisfactory. Usually both parties were partly responsible for collisions, but the one least responsible escaped penalty. If his suggestion were adopted the liability ivould he ‘ proportional to the blame attachable to the parties concerned' —It was decided to refer the matter to all associations,- and the- North Island, with a recommendation for endorsement.

On t'he motion of Dr. Gibbs-, (Nelson) ~ the Union decided ,to recommend the executive to formulate a scheme for the establishment of a body for the control of national and international motoring interests i n New Zealand, that body to have equal representation by the North and South Islands.—The executive was asked to report on .the scheme at the next quarterly meeting.
