G.A.'A. AND H.OOPENING MEETING CLOSE FINISHES The first track meeting of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club nvas conducted on the Childers road reserve last evening before a good crowd. The track was in good order, although still a bit ou the soft side. Some very close finishes were witnessed in the sprint events, especially in the final of the men’s 75 yards handicap, where inches ‘separated the first four runners. A. Young ran a splendid race in the half mile flat handicap, having the field! under control half way through the final lap, and staving off a strong challenge by 0. Wellington.

The 440 yards junior cycle handicap produced another good finish, 1 1 . Chitty getting the verdict by a foot from A. Aitken. I. Martin got. the best of a good start in the 50 yards men’s scratch race and held the advantage to win by six inches from G. Quinn and E. Grant, who dead-heated for second. The following are file results of the events, the number in each being given in parentheses:— 75 yards men’s handicap, ,first heat (-5): J. Reed 71yds. 1 ; W. Hazell 6yds. 2, T. Leslie Tlyds. 3.
