HUGE LABOR GAINS
BRITISH MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS CONSERVATIVES SUFFER MOST. (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel, Copyright) (Rec. Nov. 2, S P.m.) LONDON, Nov. 2. Municipal elections are being held in over 350 cities and boroughs i n England and Wales to-day to replace one-third of the councils. The first 100 results show that Labor has 172 gains and five losses : the Conservatives six gains and ICG losses ; Liberals five gains and 31 losses; and Independents 10 gains and 51 losses but Labor so far has only seeUr ed Control of Barnsley, WaHsCnd, Dcrby, Bolton. Sunderland, Salford, and Bootle. Those defeated in Manchester include Ladv Simon and Lord Stanley ol Alderlev. Liberals. LONDON, Nov. 2The latest results are:—Labor ISO gains -5 losses : Conservatives 6 gains, 112 losses ; Liberals 5 gains. 33 losses ; Independents 10 gains 51 lossesThe remainder of the results will be declared to-day. Labor at Oldham gained five seats and lost two to the Consevatives and Liberals. Mr. Herbert Smith, miners’ leader, was defeated at Barnsley. The Manchester Guardian says ; that the swing to Labor at the mun--1 ic-ipal elections is stronger than had been anticipated. It was especially marked in Yorkshire and Ike northeast and confirms the view that East Fulham was no flash in the pan. The Daily Herald declares that the electors have struck a blow foi better bousing and soc-ial services.
