Bernard and Bui) to the Wai_ kolm County Council in connection with its action against the East Coast Commissioner in the Supreme Court. The solicitors reported that Mr. Justice Blair had upheld Mr. Burnard’s contention that Section 105 of tho Rating Act imposed a duty on U)C East Coast Commissioner to pay rates out of any revenues derived hy him from the property rated, and that R'e council’s remedy was not confined to obtaining a charging order against the property, as contended by the defendant. In the result the council obtained. payment of the full rates unpaid.

'“Further to the inspector’s report re unlicensed vendors supplying milk in tile borough,” intimated the Tow n Clerk (Mr. W. M. Jenkins) in a report to tho Borough Council meeting last evening, “he states that eight new licenses have been taken out during the fortnight making a total of 26 new licenses to date. It. E>. Maude, the Council decided unanimously to accede to the request. An important development in the erection of the Robinson Memoir,ial Clock Tower, which is to be constructed in Gladstone road between Grey street and Derby street, eventuaed at the Borough Council meeting last evening, when it was decided to accept the tender of Mr H. “During tlie past fortnight,’ stated a report to last evening s meeting of the Borough Council, “advice has been given drivels re the adoption of angle parking. Lines as instructed by the council have been painted on the streets to assist drivers to nark at the correct angle. Special attention was given to lorries carting coal from the s.s. Gabriella on the 16th and 17th inst. and except in three cases, where warnings were issued, everything was in order. The Gisborne Publicity League, in a letter road to the Borough Council last night stated that it was intended to hold a carnival on the visit- of H.M.S. Diomede to Gisborne, and asked if the Council would issue an invitation to all spo'ts bodies, clubs, etc., to assist in the project. The Deputy-Mayor, Cr. 11. E. Maude, who presided, said it was intended to got into touch with all clubs, sports bodies. etc., on the occasion of t : 'o visit of both thc H.M.S. Labui'nan and H.M.S. Diomede, and on His motion it was decided to reply that the committee would co-operate with the Publicity League in tlie matter of entertaining both officers and men from tlie warships.
