YELLS AND STINRBOMBS FOR GERMAN ELAY

Extraordinary scenes marked the first production at the Shaftesbury Theatre last nigfih of the Gerhard Hauptmann’s play, “Before Sunset” in which the famous German actor, Werner Krauss, (was making his first appearance op, the English stage. The opening of the play was greet ed with ironical applause and shouts of .abuse from the gallery, while leaflets demanding a boycott of Hitler, and Nazi actors were showered into the auditorium, and stinkbombs were exploded in the gallery. Boggy Ashcroft appeared 1 in front of the curtain and pleaded for a fair chance for Krauss. The play was started again, hut the uproar continued, the demonstrator.s using whistles and rattles. A man in the dress circle jumped ■to his feet and hysterically denounced Hitlerism, a general scuffle developing when the police ejected him.

A strong force of police invaded the gallery, and removed the noisiest demonstrators.

Krauss later appeared on the Stage and was given an ovation.
