Norma Shearer returns to tho screen after a noticeable interval as a changed personality, for in ‘‘Smilin' Through”, she wins more hearts with her charming and romantic acting tlia-u she has ever done in her more sophisticated performances. In a dual role, as Moonyeen Glare and later, as Moonyeen’s sister’s child, Kathleen, she lives through the loves and sadnesses of two ages in a spirit of unaffected and romantic sincerity. Tho old world settings _and dresses are artistically in keeping with the earner period of tire play, and Norma Shearer is equally as beautifully gowned when the threads of -tho story arc continued! dulling the years of the war. Frederic March plays opposite Norma Shearer in both generations of tho story, cast as Jeremy Wayne and then later as Kenneth, the former’s son. Leslie Howard plays Sir John Cartaret, the lover of Moonyeen and the guardian of Kathleen, and O P. Moggie is inn tho rolo of Dr. Owen, IVis lifelong friend. The. story is. that of a,man who,cannot forget the memory of tragedy when the fulfilment of Msrlove is blighted .on his wedding d'ay. 'Fifty years afterwards the son of the man who caused his bitterness returns and falls in love with the niece of the girl whom this man lias loved. Gut of the bitterness in his heart he at first endeavours to keep the young lovers apart, and only when the spirit of his departed ono , warns him of the harm he is causing- does he relent. In the supporting programme there- iis a variety of interesting and amusing items. The Cadonas, a family ,of trapeze .artists, provide some unusual aerial features, and Sir Harry Lander sings '‘She’s Ma. Daisy” Telephoned. reserves should fie collected by 7.30.
