RIDING WITH 540 HANDS ON HANDLEBAR.
“A dangerous practice/’ commented Sergeant Clark at -to Police Court, yesterday, when Michael Rowan admitted a charge of -riding :1 bicycle without having one hand least on the, handlebars. Sergeant Clark said the practice was very common in town and the case had been brought as a warning. A little publicity might put a stop to it.*.. Defendant., was unfortunate in being' the first caught. The local authorities looked upon it as a, serious offence., and passed o by-law to stop it. Cyclists riding? in this manner wero a danger to thcm-el'-os and to others. Some cyclists were _m the habit of riding with their hands in their pockets or rolling eigaret tes. , . , I The Justices, Messrs. I. Mtrfieki and C. Blackburn, convicted defendant, adding that, in view of the fact that the case was brought as a warning, no fine would be inflicted. The chairman said that only that morning he had seen a cyclist riding with hi s arms folded across his chest. If he was on the bench and such cases came forward again he would impose the maximum penalty.
