! borough alfairs were dealt with at tho fortnightly meeting of the council last evening, when ‘ the Mayor (Mr John Jackson)-, presided over , the following: Crs. r H. E. Maude, G. Bradley Smith, H. H. DeCosta, W. J. JlacsGibbon, .D. S. Thompson, H. Holmes, and -J. H: Hall.

Signed by a number of Butene road and Harris street residents, a petidaon. was received .complaining of the condition of the watercourse at the corner, of Harris street and Rutene road, and urging : that the drain should bo piped-and filled. Tho menace to traffic caused by the present open drain was emphasised.—lt was decided that the council should 'inspect the locality. ■ i The trustees of the 'Childers road reserve wrote requesting the council to remove the four corners of the bank forming the cycle' track at the ground. —The letter was referred to the reserves committeo with) power to act. The Wairoa Harbor Board forwarded an invitation for the.council to be represented at the local bodies’ conference in Wairoa on June 10, when rating problems would be discussed. — It was decided to reply -pointing out jdiat the matter had been taken up -% the iMunicipal Association. GENERAL- REPORTS. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The public works committee reported, infer -alia, on the following mattersr— > “A list Vpf works for the fortnight was •submitted by the engineer, the principal being: Reinstatement of large shed, borough •jya<rdsg cleaning out Kaiti septic tank; overhaul Macrae bath; and repairs to waterworks. Regarding cleaning the septic tank. it ' was agreed to make tlm wages no to £1 per dav as given for Stanley road.

“A deputation fronj the taxi proprietors on stands' in Peel street, in 'front of the Siev.wrigiit Memorial and opposite the Bank of N.S.M ~ waited on the committee and Requested that they be allowed to amalgamate in order to reduce telephone charges. The traffic inspector reported that- he was favourable to the suggestion, as it would improve the traffic conditions on the northern end of Peel street hy confining that locality to a bus stand alone. The committee agreed to recommend that the suggestion be given effect to. buses not to stand within 60ft. of Gladstone road, change-over to "Vic made as from July 1 next. “A complaint was received about a nuisance existing through water lodging in Kopuawhakapata creek above the culvert, and it "as resolved that an inspection be made of the locality.” RESERVES COMM ITT EE. The reserves and waterworks coi'nruitteo reported as follows: ‘•Botanical Gardens.—Willow trees interfering with native shrubbery: This matter was discussed when the engineer was asked to have the threo willow trees complained of removed. - ? “Training Shed Site.—An offer was received to purchase the training shed site, and it was agreed to request the person to submit his highest offer. “Water Trough, Awapuni Road.— A supply of water to a property partly in the borough and partly in the county was considered, when at was agreed that the council should not make a charge for same, the account for the current quarter to be cancelled. i “Question Reduction Water Ohaiges for a Large Consumer—This matter received the committee’s i careful consideration, if being event’ll ually decided that • the committee take n,o action in the matter.”

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The finance ; and health committee reported on the following matters: “An. application was received for permission to erect a pie stall in Peel ■str'eet, but as there were not sufficient particulars available the matter was held over until these were: obtained. - “The chairman of the Mortgagf tor’s’ Adjustment Commission wrote regarding rates on a town property, requesting- that same lie taken in monthly payments of £5. This agreed to whilst the -payments were made promptly, but the council could not waive their rights as against the mortgagee. In another case' six months - extension vas granted.” ENGINEER'S REPORT. The report tof the engineer, >M r. E. R. Thoriias, 'included references to the following matters:— • .

“Reserves,—Usual work has been carried out and work at Anzac Park and Aberdeen road vegetable gardens has. been continued. Childers uoad reserve; The work .of re-instat-ing existing sheds -as • dressing sleds is in hand. Botanical Gardens: A pole lias been erected for re-instate-meirt of electric light at the baml rotunda.

Maintenance.—Maintenance jobs comprised: Street cleaning; cleaning stormwater drains and sumps; repairs to various: streets; cleaning, trimming and repairing various lootpaths; cleaning drains; cartage -Of spoil; haulage of gravel; minor repairs to plant and bridges. “Itoads.—Repairs to waterbound macadam roads have bccu carried out at Derby, Co'bdcu and Carnarvon streets and Aberdeen and Roebuck roads.

“-Footpaths.!—Blinding has. been spread on footpath at Cook street. “Buildings.—The re-erection of shed (removed from Cliilde-rs road reserve) at the borough yard is in hand.

'‘Firewood for Relief.—Firewood is being carted when a motor lorry can be- spared for the work. '‘'Unemployment Relief Works.— During the fortniglit, employment has been provided for 21)9 men per week. Tlie main works comprised: Vegetable gardens at Botanical Gardens and Anzac Park reserves; cleaning and trimming footpaths and drains; Kaiti Hill road: levelling sanitary depot; cleaning Kaiti septic tank: preparing tenuis court at Macrae bath ; cleaniug-up • Kaiti creek. “Macrae Bath s .-#-P reparut io u of the ground for a tennis court has been completed and grass seed will be sown first favourable opportunity. The annual overhaul of pumps is in band.'-' WATERWORKS. Regarding the waterworks. the engineer reported that reticulation throughout the borough had been given the usual attention. Gauge readings were: highest lloibs, lowest- 85ibs. Work was carried out as follows: 'Removing pipes front Tur-j----heru river at Lytton road; laying 2in. main to Kaiti septic tank; repairing services, hydrants, valves, etc.; repairing main line. The main line was maintained in workng .order, there being three leaks during tire fortnight, viz., one at Clark’s (Manutuke). one at Maka.raka and one near the Bridge Hotel. Tbe water was turned off for one hour to enable repairs to be carried out. Preparations were, made and pip«s carted out to King’s (Te Arai) to install two new pipes at tin’s section of the line, there being two serious leaks in tin's locality. The work was carried out on Monday and Tuesday, loth and IGtli inst., and the water was turned off for seven hours on Monday and four hours on Tuesday. The: quantity of water that passed through tho Venturi meter for the weeks ending Btli and loth May. 1833, was 6,410,000 and 6,860,000 gallons respectively.
