SATURDAY’S AIATCHES

(Contributed.)

Following are the results of Saturday’s games in the basketball competition : A Grade: Celtic defeated Zaks, 11 —9; H.S.O.G. defeated Tui, 16—14. B Grade: H.S.O.G. defeated Ormond, s s —l; Kiwi defeated All Blacks, 7—4.

The strength of the new Zak was again shown in the game they played against Celtic, formidable opponents for any t.eam. Both teams were out several mornings last week, and were, very fit. Scoring goal lor goal, the half-time score read 5 all. Using slioit swift passes, both teams caught well and judged their passes accurately. With very little .difference between the teams the final whistlh blew with the score in favor of Celtic. Once again the combination of tho Celtic forwards stood out, and probably it was to this third of their team that Celtic owed tlioir ageThe H.5.0.G.-Tui -gains was ?another very even game,’ but not as fast nor as pretty as the Celtic-Zaks game. TlieKij- was tittle to choose between; t,life teams, tho half-time score being,(i—o.: H.S.O.G. ill .the defence and centre used long throws . with shorter’ passes, in - the goal,. while Tubs; short quick passes ,in all thirds showed better, combination. In,tbs B grade.,. H.S.O.G. (B) and Drmond-.gavft one of ; the poorest displays seen -foL‘- some time. -Both teams need some, solid , practice at catching. Faulty , catches made for scrambles, and wild -high throws such as Ormond indulged in made it anybody’s ball. The correct way -is to pass the’ ball ’straight out from the shoulder level w-itli two hands, and . never to heave it. from the .cteolc of one arm. While HiS.G.G. (B) showed'- better combination and more accurate passing, tlioir faulty catching and sloswrWe?’ tool? away any ~ advantage they mighit have had, and they gain.

ed the victory by the very narrow margin of one goal. The KHvi-All 6 Blacks was a better game to watch than the first B grade j match. Both teams have good style, i with Kiwi showing to advantage in : pace, straighter passes, and quicker thinking. With more combined practice, however. All Blacks should develop into a first-class team and the score,, 7—l, shows that they were not far behind their opponents on this casionTHIS WEEK’S DRAW . THURSDAY MATCHES The following are tho results of tho competition matches played on the Domain on Thursday:— A Grade: H.S.O.G. drew with Hula 16 all; Ex-Cash Stores 16 defeated Athletic A 6; Brownies 14 lost to Triangle 15. B 'Grade: Olympic 24 defeated Triangle B 4. The H.5.0.G.-Huia game was even from start to finish. Both teams showed much improvement in their play. H.S.O.G. defence played well, while Huia centres showed good combination. Ex-Cash Stores-Athletic A was a very keen, game in the first half, as both teams.have improved considerably, but in the second half, play was very ragged m the Ex-Cash Stores goal third. Both ffearns seemed to throw wildly, thus making play uninteresting to spectators. A very clean and interesting game was witnessed when Triangle A met Brownies. This game caused much excitement as the ball travelled up and down the field, and the teams scored alternately. Triangle goalies showed a good display of shooting. Brownies have showed great improvement since their first match and will have a good chance if practice <is kept up. There was only one B grade match •played and- that was between Triangle B v Olympic. The match was v/ery uninteqeStiug to spectators,. as hath teams were short, Triangle hav. iug fiv|C players and Olympic eight. Wild throws seemed to he the main object of both teams.

NOTES

Basketball competitions were continued last week in fine weather, while’there has been considerable activity out of town.

The Matawai team is joining up again for its fourth season, but will not bo taking part in tho June 3 tournament in town.

A.t a meeting of referees held on Monday evening, . there were present: Messrs A/ Wallace,- 0. Briiusdeu,’. It. Anderson, J. Grawford-Smi.tli, Mesdames CoJe, Airey, Heeney,’ and Williamson/ and Misses Walker, E. Wallace-, li. Byrne, L.’ Pickard, M. O’Tlallufaiij and O. Miller. Mrs R. Cole was elected to tlie- chair. Arrangements were nnudo -for referees On June 3, when ah" all-day tournament, will be held. Those present brought 1/if ore tho meeting questions xegardiiig points of play- and these were discussed, the meeting finding which rule .applied in each case, and • t-110 penalty' necessary. Attention was drawn to' various common - infringements and referees’were asked -to bo oil the alert whero .theso were concfprned. »’’ * * During the week the president and secretary visited 1 Mau’utuko upon request,’ 'to’hold a- formal meeting, and as a result a Manutuke team has been formed. This team, which will probably adopt dark gnecn and fawn for its colors-:will take part iu the weekly competition of tlie Association ■playing in the Saturday B grade, and will commence this week- ~

The majority of the teams have decided by now upon methods to raise their tournament money. The wisest plan is to start early before competition becomes too keen. During tho last week, Tuis entertained their friends at a successful flag five hundred evening at the Rite. Cash Stores and Ormond have arranged dances for the near future, while Convent and other teams have been holding parties in private homes.

If the plans of several enthusiasts on the Coast come to fruition, it will not be long before sub-associations are formed at Ruatoria and Tolaga Bay, with teams at Tokomaru also. There has been a team at Tokomaiu Bay for several years, bu- with no other teams on the Coast their only games were one or two a year against Gisborne teams. Tho Poverty Bay Association is ready to give all help possible to start teams on the Coast, unci if successful, another big stride in tho progress of tho game will have been made.
