MATAWAI NEWS

GROUP OP LEGION FORMED (Special to the Times.) The members of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Legion visited Matawai on Saturday evening when a meeting was held m, the hall, Mr Hope presiding over quite a good gathering. Interesting addresses (were delivered by Messrs Gambrill, Hilary and Niclio 11s. The chief note struck in each address was for unity, thought and action in political matters, great stress being laid upon the fact that too much apathy was shown towards political matters by the majority ol people of this Dominion. Questions were answered. Great interest was taken in the movement and the meeting resulted in a group being formed in Matawai.

MATAWAI "WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The fifth birthday meeting of the Matawai W.I. was held in the hall on Thursday. The meeting, which was presided over by Mrs Burgess, opened with the Institute song, the motto foi the day was: “United we stand, divided we fall.” Mrs Burgess then gave a brief history of the Institute, reading a letter from Miss Silencer, t-lie chief organiser, congratulating Matawai on forming an institute. She also mentioned that Matawai, iwould some day be proud of the distinction of being the first institute in. Poverty Bay. The afternoon was given up to the entertaining of members and friends Mrs Nevermnn and Miss Emmerson, as a duet, rendered 1 a Maori song, ■ Miss Emmerson accompanying -on the ukelele. Mrs Davidson played tavo violon solos, which everyone greatly appreciated, her accompanist, being Miss D. Scholium, who afterwards delighted the gathering by contributing two pianoforte solos. Community singing at intervals' gave an opportunity for everyone to take part, as also did the many competitions which Mrs Fielder -had gone to such trouble to organise. The competition for the afternoon was “The- best bargain on the trad* table costing 6d”. By greater interest than previously being taken in this competition tho trade table war. the means of augmenting the W.I. funds to a greater extent,. Then the afternoon tea wifli its delicious birthday cake .is worthy of mention. The cake was made by Mesdames Robb and Merthens, while Mrs Tnyloj was responsible for the icing and deoorai, ions, which everyone pronounced a. great success. There were between thirty and forty present, quite good for Matawai\s small population. Many others who intended being present wore kept away by illness, whilst others who live at a distance were notable to attend, owing to their husbands who, in most cases, are also their chauffeurs, being too busy to ditive them in. All expressed their regrets at being unable to bo present. Quite an enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.
