SWINE FEVER
OUTBREAK worse than EXPECTED. TWO MORE FARMS AFFECTED. IMMEDIATE AND DRASTIC STEPS ESSENTIAL. . Prp<te \ WELLINGTON, May 16. „ There are indications that swine fever may yet spread over a considerable area unless the steps taken are immediate and drastic. Two more faring in the affected area at Johnsonville showed indications of'the disease overnight, making seven in that district. It seems that the outbreak tvas not reported to the department as soon a s it might. have been, as a case not generally known at' Normanclale. Lower Hutt, mentioned for the first time to-day, occurred a week ago. This necessitates a wider area of examination by the Stock Department than first supposed. It is stated that the trouble is more likely to spread in rainy, misty weather than in fine weather, owing to the drainage infecting creeks. S<> far no pigs have been destroyed’ by the department, which is awaiting the completion of the trenches to receive them which may mean that none will he killed till Thursday.
