REGULATION OF SUPPLIES AGAIN URGED. VOLUNTARY ACTION SUGGESTED BY MINISTER; (British Official Wireless.} RUGBY, May 15. Jn the House of Commons, M.r. J. H. Thomas stated that arising out of tho representations by the High Commissioner for New Zealand l as to tho general fall in wholesale prieo levels in tho ease of butter discussions were proceeding with the Australian and New Zealand Governments, as to tho possibility of regulating imports in a manner' satisfactory to. all parties. Ho pointed out that in view of tho Ottawa'agreements, tho regulation of imports into the United Kingdom of butter, cheese, and other milk products from tho Dominions before August. 1935, could only take place by voluntary arrangement. Major W. E. Elliot said that in view of tho increased supply of homeproduced milk now being diverted to manufacturers, and to the accumulntion of stocks in manufacturers’ hands, and to the urgent need for providing markets for a. larger homeproduced output, ho felt bound to ask for an emergency measure ior a substantial reduction of imports °f condensed whole and condensed skim milk, skimmed cream, and milk powder, in order to establish more stable market conditions in tho interests of all concerned. He had met .representatives of foreign exporters and had every hope of an adequate measuse of voluntary co-operation. Early conversations on the same subject with tho Dominions’ representatives were being arranged. Major Elliot also is trying to force the price of surplus milk for manufacturing to 6d per gallon. The price is now 33d. Tho Australian Press Association 1 earns that Major Elliot to-day consulted Mr. S. M. Bruce in reference to the limitation of Australian supplies of tinned cream, and condensed and powdered milk in the interest of British industry. The quantities °f Australian exports of these commodities to Britain is very small. The question of butter an d cheese was not raised. Britain thus far has not submitted to the Dominion representatives’ proposals -regarding restnc tions.
