MR ERNEST TORRENCE. ID. PA. by Elec. Teb Cony right’ . NEW YORE, May 15. Ernest Torrence, the veteran screen actor, died this morning, aged 54 years. MR E. READ Deep regret- will he felt, by a large circle of friends in Gisborne and tho surrounding district at ihe death, at his home, at Makauri, yesterday, at the ago of 77 years, of Mr Frederick Read, who had lived in. Poverty Ray for 57 years. Air Read was horn in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, and came to Gisborne at the age of twenty years. He was first- empiayed by Captain Read and later went- t-0 work for the late Mr D. McNair. Subsequently, he took up sheepiarming at Moxu and at Wharekopae and was also in partner- ■ ship with the late Air D. AlcNair at Mangaheia. At the age of 35 Air Read married Miss Eliza Alc-Kinley who died about five years ago. Air Read epent the latter years of his life on his farm at Alakauri. Air Read took an active part in the development of this district, and also took a great interest in school and church work. For some time he was chairman, of the Alakauri school committee and. was a. director of the Gisborne Farmers’ Co-ouera-tive Co. He is survived by a family of four. Air J. R. Read, To Arai Valley, Mr F. J. Read, Motu, Airs J. W. Kain. Alakauri, and Aliss E. Read, Alakauri.
The funeral will leave his laie residence. Makaurf, at 1.30 p.m. to-mor-row for Makaraka cemetery. MR- W. G. MACLAUPJX Throughout t-ho. whole or Poverty Bay a very large oirclo of friends and acquaintances will learn with deep regret of the death yesterday or 'Mr William Gilbert Maelaurin, or.e of the most highly-respected residents of this district. What appeared to be a Might illness a week ago, took a serious turn, and the end came yesterday morning.
Mr Maelaurin was born in the Shetland Islands in 1563, ana as & boy of twelve years of age. came to New Zealand, spending his firstyears in. this country in the Waikato district, where he- gained valuable knowledge in farming. Tony years ago ho came to Poverty Bay, and took up portion or the Whataupoko block, which; he farmed with much sue ccss. L-ater he took over the Mangatuna station, bordering on Mr T. Holden £ s Rimuroa- (property, and m 1910 he disposed of his interests.there and bought laud at Hexton. Ho built a handsome residence there, occupying it with his family in ‘,191?. and made his home on the Hexton property up to the time of his death. Naturally of a retiring disposition, Mr MacLaurin played only a minor part in public life, being g- member of the old Pouawa Road Board, and latterly a member of the Cook County Council,, where his practical knowledge of farming needs made his ad' vice invaluable. Or a ‘kindly and gentle, disposition, he .was always ready'to extend add to those in distress, and was a- generous supporter of social movements. Mr Maelaurin is survived by Mrs Maelaurin. and two daughters and two sons. Tho daughters are Mesdames B.- C. Watkins aud J. D. Williams, well-known Coast- residents, and the sons are Messrs Robert Maclaufin, architect, of Auckland, and Wilfred Maelauriu, farmer, of Gisborne. There arc seven brothers and sisters of the late Mr W. G. Maclaurtn surviving, these comprising Mesdamcs Goodfellow (Auckland)/ Ball (Napier), and Waddingtoh (Masterton); Dr. Maelaurin (Wellington), Mr E. T. W. Maelaurin (Wellington)j and Mr Kenneth Maelaurin (Te Awa-xnut-u). Tho funeral will leave the late residence, Waipnna, at 2.30 p.m. to-day for the Taruheru, cemetery.
