Bowen, the chairman was empowered to call a special meeting of the council should any legislation of especial, importance to the comity come before Parliament.. ...... Ranger E. A. Cameron reported •seizing 170 head of stock for impounding during the month ended January 14, while Ranger T. Harris reported seizing. 25 head and finding 218 head being grazed oil the roads. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Tlie engineer, Air. A.. Guthrie, ie ported on maintenance and construe lion of highways and county roads during the month, ended January lo as follows: — . “Maintenance, which was of a hg * nature, was carried out in 11 m^ s during tho month. -—Highways.— “Gisho'rne-AVairoa via Mbrcre'.-Un-sealed sections were given a hg l coat of river shingle. Shoulders of bitumen pavement were tnminei with power grader. “Gishorne-AAhairoa via Hangaroa. In addition to usual surfacemen fi'* s relief workers have been engaged removing earthquake slips between 30m and 44 m. The usual maintenance was carried out between 6.7 m. and 30m. “Gisborne-Opotiki via Alotu.-—Re-pairs with river shingle were carried out" where necessary on unsealed section and surface trimmed with power grader. Improvements were effected to brick culverts at 9m. These were lengthened and fillings put in ' with soil from flood area of road. “Gisbornc-Ormond via "YY aiohika.— Maintenance was confined to surfacing of shingle section with powei grader. ' “Patutalii-Rere. —The usual maintenance was carried out. watei'tables cleaned and repairs effected to bridges.” On the motion of Or. Hall, it va> decided to apply for the extension of the special relief available for restoration of earthquake damage for two months after January. The report was then adopted. Scott) reported ou his operations during the past month as follows: — “No. 1 Section: I have made throe trips over this district, namely lo r the purpose ot" watching heavy traffic carting. “No. 2 Section: One trip was made to Alotu and two additional trips as far as Te Ivaraka.

“No. 3 Section. —I visited this district between Gisborne and Kick’s Bay. One unlicensed motor lorry was detected at Hick’s Bay. All our highways arc carrying a considerable amount of traffic in connection with the carting of lambs. A close watch is being kept to see that there is no overloading, and excessive speed is also being checked. “Prosecutions. —On December 24, two motor-lorry drivers were convicted for failing to take out tlie required heavy traffic license. Three others will he dealt with on February 1.

“Licenses issued comprised live heavy traffic and 32 drivers.’ ■ The ✓report was adopted.
