OUTBREAK IN AUCKLAND
CHURCH
(Prys° Association.} AUCKLAND, Jan. 17
A lire which broke out at the back of St. Luke’s Anglican Church. Ml. Albert, shortly after 9.30 to-night threatened, for a period, to gut the building, which is entirely built of wood. Good work by the Alt. Albert Brigade, however, confined the outbreak to the chancel and vestry, the total damage being estimated at from CLIO to £2OO.
The fire apparently originated near the steps leading to the vestry, but the cause is unknown. The church had not heen used for any service since Sunday evening. The vicar R. G. Coats) and his family were a wav on holiday, but the temporary occupants of the vicarage next to the church had no suspicion of anything being amiss until they received a telephone message from a ladv who had already broken the street alarm box.
The insurances, owing to the absence of the vicar, were not available.
