EXCITING RACES -AT SPEEDWAY. WOE ED’S Oil AMPI ON R ETA INS GOLD HELMET. (Press Association.'. AUCKLAND, Jan. IT Kean competition nmoug visitors and local riders resulted in exciting races at Western Springs Speedway last evening. There was an attendance of 3500 people. The most exciting race was that in which E. Langton, world’s champion, defeated W. Phillips, who had challenged him for the Gold Helmet. Although he drew the outside running, Langton took the lead on the first corner, and Phillips was unable to pass the holder, who eventually won by a. length.
The other visiting riders were in good form, as were the majority of loeal men, notably D. Mattson, cousin of the Dominion champion, who won the January Handicap in good style. The fastest time was made by Phillips, who covered the mile in Imin. 10 4-5 see. He also did one lap in 18 3-sscc., which is l-ssec. fastor than the official lap record. A fault in the lighting system resulted' in half an hour’s delay, the time being, devoted to community singing, led by two of the English .riders, E. Gregory and T. Stevenson.
