SPECTACULAR SPEEDWAY SMASH

ONE RIDER SERIOUSLY INJURED (Press Association .7 AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. A spectacular collision between two cinder track machines resulted in both riders being thrown heavily and rendered unconscious at Western Springs Speedway last evening. One of Urn riders, R. Cairns, aged 34, married, was. later admitted to the Auckland Hospital suffering from slight concussion and fracture of the collar-bone, while the other, F. Day. escaped more lightly and competed later in the evening.

The accident, occurred at the conclusion of the fourth boat, ot the January Handicap. The winner, D. Mattson, and the second man, T. Stevenson, had already passed the post when Cairns and Day were coming out of the last corner. Just before crossing the lino, Cairns, who was running last, accidentally touched the rear wheel of Day’s machine with his own mount, and in an instant both machines turned over. The two riders fell heavily, both lying unconscious on the track immediately in front of the judge’s box. The injured riders were attended by members of the. St. John Ambulance Association on duly at the Speedway, but it was some time before either regained big senses. Day was the first to recover, hut Cairns was not helped to his feet for over live minutes.
