RAILWAY “CUTS"
UNPRECEDENTED DF.ADLOCE TX BRITAIN. SEPARATE REPORT BY EACH BOARD MEMBER. (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel- Copyright) (Roe. Jan. 15, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 15. Unprecedented deadlock is caused by the issue of five separate reports by members of the National Wages Board for Railways Hitherto the Board has always managed io agree on certain principal findings. This time only the railways’ own nominees neeept the companies' full claim for wages reductions totalling £5,000.000. The delegates are unanimously against them, and representatives of the railway users me divided, two for and two against Uie claim.
The chairman, sir Harold Morris, separately reports in favor of a reduction only to the extent of- ortefifth of the railways’ demand. This is acceptable neither to the companies nor to" flie unionists.
None rtf the findings ore binding. The newspapers take a serious yiew of the situation. Some' suggest' tile cud of' the Board.' as a. ' Vnethod of conciliation may result.
While the financial and most o,f th« Conservative organs express the opinion that the companies’ case is proved the Daily Express takes the- -Hew that wage cuts only increase trade depression by rcduciug the peoples spending power. • ; “The companies and the unionists’ . says the journal, “should agree f° the chairman’s recommendations”.
