Mrs. Pawley, who, with Mr. Corkran, was captured by Chinese bandits some weeks ago, writing to her father on October 8 says that the bandits absolutely refuse to reduce the ransom from one million dollars. Continuing, she says; "It is pretty well hell here. We received parcels of everything O.K. Biess you ail for the lice powder. The lice are pretty bad, but have not reached my chin yet. Next time the messengers come they must bring 30,000 dollars and 200 ounces of opium, else goodbye to our ears. The bandit chief is fed up with us. Trusting you implicitly so please help us in keeping our tails up.” Mr. Corkran adds in a postscript, "Bung ho."
